Fed: Nuke deal only for peaceful purposes - Wen

Premier WEN JIABAO says China will only use Australian uranium for peaceful purposes.

ALEXANDER DOWNER signed two agreements with China's Foreign MINISTER LI ZHAOXING this
morning .. on supplying uranium to China.

It followed a meeting between Mr WEN and JOHN HOWARD on nuclear transfer and nuclear cooperation.

Mr WEN's told a media conference through an interpreter .. the uranium will only be
used for peaceful purposes.

He says both countries are members of the International Atomic Energy Agency and today's
agreement provides safeguards for its use.

Mr HOWARD says he's satisfied the safeguards will be enforced .. and the government
may look at ways to expand supply down the track.
