Vic: Allegations against state's top cop rejected
Allegations that Victoria's most senior police officer is caught up in a corruption
inquiry have been dismissed by police.
According to police sources, chief commissioner CHRISTINE NIXON brought in an informer
from Sydney who passed on information to Melbourne's underworld instead of to detectives.
Reports on Melbourne radio stations say the informer has been accused of receiving
sensitive information from two officers who have since been suspended.
And according to ABC radio, a corruption probe by police is focusing on a criminal
informer who was personally brought into a major investigation by chief commissioner NIXON.
However, the police have issued a statement saying matters relating to an informant
are being investigated, but Ms NIXON has not acted improperly.
Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS also says he fully supports Ms NIXON.
But opposition leader ROBERT DOYLE says the allegations are disturbing and there needs
to be an investigation.
