Vic: Man appears in court over Pong Su haul
MELBOURNE, April 22 AAP - A Chinese national accused of assisting the importation ofa record heroin haul in Victoria last week faced a Melbourne court briefly today.
Ta Song Wong, 37, is charged with one count of aiding and abetting the importationof a commercial amount of heroin, estimated to be worth $80 million.
Wong was arrested last Thursday near Lorne on Victoria's south-east coast.
Prosecutor Scott Bruckard told a brief hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court thatWong had been a passenger on the Pong Su cargo ship.
The Australian navy intercepted the ship on Sunday off the NSW coast four days after50 kilograms of heroin was brought ashore in Victoria.
Three other men who were charged last week in Victoria over the importation were expectedto face the same court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, federal police were today seeking to extradite the Pong Su's master andcrew from Sydney.
Wong made no application for bail and was remanded to return to court on August 12.
